Martin's West Wedding, Baltimore MD - A Photographer's Guide
Martin's West is the largest of the Martin's Caterers banquet houses, at 6817 Dogwood Road just off the Baltimore Beltway on the west side of the city. It is one of the venues we photograph at, and if you are looking for a Martin's West wedding photographer, the first thing to know is that this building was made for scale. Six ballrooms, a lobby that rises several stories, gazebos outside, and a team that has been running weddings in Maryland for more than 60 years. The pictures you get here come from knowing which of those pieces your day actually uses.
The spaces
The lobby. The venue leads with it, and for good reason. It is a multi-story entrance hung with chandeliers, and it is the first thing every guest walks into. It is also the one indoor space every wedding in the building shares.
Six ballrooms. They range from about 1,600 square feet to more than 18,000, and the venue hosts events from roughly 100 guests up to 2,000. Your event planner will match the room to your count. A 150-person wedding and a 600-person wedding at Martin's West are in very different rooms, so ask which one you are in before you plan anything else.
The gazebos. There are two on the grounds, set into the outdoor space the venue describes as built for ceremonies and photographs. The larger one is the one that hosts an outdoor ceremony.
The tent pad. The grounds include a pad for a large tent, for couples who want more of the day outdoors than a gazebo allows.
The private suite. A furnished suite for you, your family and your wedding party, with refreshments. It is yours for the whole celebration, not just the morning, which matters more than it sounds.
What it photographs like
The pages that rank for this venue are other photographers' wedding recaps - a couple's story, a gallery, a thank you. They are lovely and they tell you almost nothing about the building. Here is how the day actually moves.
Start in the suite. Getting ready on site means there is no transfer between a hotel and the venue, and that is time you get back. It also means your getting-ready pictures, your first look if you are doing one, and your ceremony all happen at one address. We spend that saved time on the people in the room instead of in a car.
The gazebo is the outdoor picture at Martin's West. A ceremony there is a daylight event, and the portraits right after it want the same daylight. That is where your date matters. Out here on the west side of Baltimore the earliest sunset of the year is around December 7 at 4:44pm and the latest is around June 27 at 8:37pm. After the clocks change in early November, sunset is already near 5pm. A summer wedding gives you a long, easy evening on the grounds. A late fall or winter wedding with a 5pm ceremony is a ceremony at dusk, and your outdoor portraits need to happen before it, not after. Neither is wrong. They are different timelines and the right one should be built on purpose.
The rain plan is a ballroom. Couples here have said their vows inside, with guests seated in a ballroom, and it works. Build that version of the day with your planner in advance so a wet forecast is a decision you already made, not a scramble on the morning of.
Inside, the lobby is your indoor portrait space. It has height, it has chandeliers, and it is the most dramatic room in the building that is not a ballroom. It is also the space every other party in the house walks through. With six ballrooms under one roof, Martin's West can host more than one event on the same day. Ask your planner what else is booked on your date, and plan your lobby portraits for a quiet window - usually while your own guests are seated or before the evening's other arrivals start.
The receptions here are big, and big receptions are where documentary coverage earns its keep. A dance floor with three hundred people on it is full of pictures that no one will pose for you. Our job in a room this size is to be in the middle of it, not standing at the edge.
One more thing worth planning. Big weddings come with big wedding parties and big families. Write your family photo list ahead of time and give it to someone who knows everyone's name. Thirty people in a formal group goes quickly when someone is calling names, and slowly when no one is.
Practical notes for couples
Martin's West is at 6817 Dogwood Road, Baltimore MD 21244, just off the Baltimore Beltway. Listings also place it in Windsor Mill or Woodlawn - it is the same building.
Parking is free and plentiful, and there are hotels nearby for out of town guests.
Catering is in-house. Plated dinners and buffets are offered at the same price, and the kitchen handles vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and kosher requests.
The venue has an open vendor policy for cultural weddings - you can bring in your own insured, licensed caterer for cuisine they do not prepare.
Every wedding reception includes non-alcoholic beverage service, and there are three tiers of open bar plus a beer and wine option.
You get an event planner before the day, and a banquet manager and a personal attendant on the day itself.
Ceremonies are optional and priced separately from the reception.
The venue does not publish wedding pricing online. You request it through their wedding brochure or by calling Martin's West at (410) 944-9433.
Common questions
Can you have your wedding ceremony at Martin's West?
Yes. Ceremonies are an optional add-on with their own cost. The larger of the two gazebos hosts outdoor ceremonies, and ceremonies are also held indoors in a ballroom, which doubles as the rain plan.
How many guests can Martin's West hold?
The venue hosts events from about 100 guests up to 2,000. Its six ballrooms run from roughly 1,600 square feet to more than 18,000, so the right room depends on your guest count. Your event planner will place you.
Is there a getting-ready room at Martin's West?
Yes. The venue provides a furnished private suite for you, your family and your wedding party, with refreshments, and it stays yours for the length of the celebration.
Can we bring our own caterer?
Catering is normally in-house through Martin's Caterers. For cultural weddings the venue has an open vendor policy, so you can bring an outside caterer as long as they are insured and licensed.
How much does a wedding at Martin's West cost?
Martin's West does not publish wedding pricing on its website. Pricing comes through the wedding brochure on the Martin's Caterers site or a call to the venue. Plated and buffet dinners cost the same, which makes the menu choice about style rather than budget.
Is there parking at Martin's West?
Yes. The venue offers ample free parking on site, and it sits right off the Baltimore Beltway with hotels nearby.
Photographing your wedding here
A building this size can swallow a wedding if no one is paying attention to the small things inside it. That is what we are there for. We work as documentary photographers - we follow what actually happens, the look across the suite, the uncle who takes over the dance floor, the minute after the vows when everyone exhales - and we stay out of the way while we do it. You can read more about how we work on our documentary wedding photography page.
If you want the day on film too, our wedding photography and film collection puts a photographer and a cinematographer on the same team, working off one plan. Our guide to what a DC-area wedding photographer costs lays out our packages in plain numbers. And if you are still comparing Baltimore venues, here is our guide to The Belvedere in Mount Vernon, a very different kind of Baltimore wedding.
When you are ready, tell us your date and your room. We will tell you how we would spend the light.
